This season, the French striker Antoine Griezmann is loaned to Atlético Madrid by FC Barcelona. At the end of the season, the Madrid club would however not intend to keep the 31-year-old player, author of a shy year (37 games, 8 goals, 6 assists), especially in La Liga (3 goals and 4 assists in 27 games).
Problem, Antoine Griezmann has never won at FC Barcelona since his arrival at the club in 2019, and a return to the Catalan formation would be badly experienced, a priori, by the French, but also by Barça, who will have to support his enormous salary (26 million euros per year) with his fragile finances. According to comments relayed by journalist Fabrizio Romano, the sporting director of FC Barcelona, Mateu Alemany, denied having raised the subject of the Frenchman with the general manager of Atlético Madrid, Miguel Angel Gil Marin: “We haven’t talked about Antoine Griezmann. His name was not part of our conversation.” The Colchoneros have a purchase option attached to the loan of the player, of the order of 40 million euros, which is lower than the market value of the French international (50 million), according to Transfermarkt.
Aware of his difficulties this season, Antoine Griezmann made his mea culpa, to Movistar : “It’s true that I didn’t score enough and the team missed it a lot. But I continued to work for the collective, in attack and in defense. I have my share of responsibility for our average results and I accept it, of course. (…) I hope to start scoring goals again as soon as possible and enjoy being on the pitch.”
The former Real Sociedad player is under contract with FC Barcelona until 2024. If Atlético Madrid do not exercise his option to buy, Antoine Griezmann will return to Catalonia this summer, but the Spanish club should put him on the list of transfers, except surprise. It remains to be seen whether clubs will be interested in the French striker, who is coming out of a mixed season with the 3rd in La Liga.
