“Today (Saturday, editor’s note) something has happened that is not in my character and should not happen. I reacted badly to an opponent and to something that happened accidentally and unintentionally. I apologise to everyone, to Stefan Posch, to my team-mates, to my family and to everyone who saw my reaction. Of course, I will accept all the consequences of my action.”

A few hours after his skid, Marcus Thuram apologised and crossed his fingers to avoid a heavy penalty. The Borussia Mönchengladbach striker was sent off directly against Hoffenhaim (1-2) on Saturday in the Bundesliga after spitting in the face of defender Stefan Posch.

Thuram was suspended for 5 games!

And not surprisingly, the French international was not spared by the German Football Association. In an official press release, the body officialized this Monday the sanction concerning Thuram: 5 matches of suspension, with also an additional match suspended, but also a fine set at 40,000 euros.

As a reminder, the current 8th Bundesliga had already financially sanctioned the former Guingampais internally with a fine corresponding to one month of his salary, paid to a charity. On the sporting level, this sanction puts an end to the year 2020 for Thuram, which will miss the German Cup match against Elversberg on Tuesday.

Important matches missed…

And with this long suspension, the 23 year old young talent will then miss 4 league matches, including a long-awaited shock against Bayern Munich! If his coach Marco Rose decides to reinstate him as soon as this sanction is over, Thuram will have the opportunity to play again on January 22nd for the reception of Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga. It remains to be seen if this unavailability will have an impact on his second half of the season and on his chances to play the Euro in 2021 with the French team…
