A key player in Pep Guardiola’s system in recent seasons, João Cancelo took everyone by surprise when he joined Bayern Munich this winter, even though his relationship with his coach had strained in recent weeks. The Portuguese side, relegated to the bench at Manchester City with the emergence of the young Rico Lewis, should find playing time in Bavaria where Noussair Mazraoui (currently injured) and Benjamin Pavard have been pulling the plug so far.
Asked at a press conference before the trip to Tottenham this Sunday (5.30 p.m.), Pep Guardiola was full of praise for his former player: “I wish him the best for the next four months. And I don’t know what will happen next season. He was an incredible element in the two Premier League titles we won. After the World Cup, we started a new pre-season and decided to play with different patterns. (…) Bayern took him because he is an exceptional player, admitted Guardiola. I’m not going to say a single negative word about him. I think everyone knows his work ethic, his passion for football and his qualities“, said the Catalan. Who knows, Bayern Munich and Manchester City may meet again this season in the Champions League, for one of the most beautiful displays that this competition can offer.
